Please come with me on a journey---a journey of the deep truth of "health and healing versus fixing" body, mind and emotions.
Having been a healing arts practitioner for almost 30 years, I have investigated and then studied three fine modalities: the Alexander technique, Gestalt therapy, and psychophysical touch and movement based on the Feldenkrais method.
I object to the popular phrase: "I am stuck!" First of all "stuck" is not a place since we are wired for ongoing movement. What we experience as a feeling of stuckness can actually be used as an opportunity to examine our life in order to become conscious and learn how to make healthy choices. This will eventually lead to people worldwide making sustainable choices of caring and sharing.
Neuroscientists report that the emotional brain is developed in the first 26 months of life. During this time, we form our emotional responses and create a blueprint that may dominate us for the rest of our lives. However, the first time this imprint gets challenged is during the "Terrible Twos" when we learn to intuitively say NO in response to feeling emotionally and sensorially endangered, or just uncomfortable and interfered with in our creative explorations. In these moments the EGO establishes itself.
If our boundaries and our NO are overridden too often, or ignored with stony silence, or even abusively punished, then our ego development turns towards unhealthy survival mechanisms. We learn how to protect the vulnerable self by creating armoring. We build a shell to safeguard our individual creative spirit. We try throwing temper tantrums, crying fits, or hiding; we become invisible, great imitators, bullies, or the good undemanding child. We try any number of endless creative devices to survive adult interferences and train ourselves to believe that the world may be a dangerous place that is often impossible to navigate successfully. We try to tune out behavior from others that is uneducated, demanding, and abusive yet well-intentioned. That confusion causes us to detach from the body, and our organic pathways become clogged with contraction and tension to help us avoid disappointment, emotional, and physical pain.
Unless there is intelligent listening and patient guidance---particularly during these first seven "sensitive" years---this self-protective behavior turns into deeply entrenched habits that may unfortunately accompany us for the rest of our lives. We create more and more reasons to continue to feed fear, and we brace ourselves against the world around us instead of learning how to trust and embrace it.
Later, as adults, we have a need to diagnose this self-protective behavior for easy identification. These unwanted automatic responses, that are simply based on triggered early memories, need a name. So we call this wounded self our EGO in order to learn how to control it. Then we add guilt, shame, and blame to the confusion, in addition to any number of often subtle, self-afflicted, abusive behaviors. This affects our body and our environment, and ultimately our whole personal and planetary world.
How do we leave this maze of Catch-22s?
The good news in all of this is that our illuminated spirit is never and can't ever be touched by any of this. It is the undercurrent--- the brilliant stream---that flows through all and everything. But if we have no way to see our way clear, and instead are hiding in our pain-body, this vast brilliant foreverness is lost to us.
So why not use the spirit of our divinely and organically designed body to experience a psycho-physical vastness that is equally indescribable? Our expanded body systems can give us a sense of the self that is safely hidden UNDER our pain-body, which lives BEYOND all the striving for a better life. They can give us a sensory experience of divine beingness, housed in a miraculously functioning body.
In order to win the wounded self's or the pain-body's trust, we need to create a safe environment---a psycho-physical creative space---that gives us a chance to re-record early programming. We need to offer a kind of a womb shelter as an unconditional presence of deep and divine remembrance.
To facilitate this, the practitioner needs to be present to her own remembrance, while getting out of the way of personal interferences and self-identity as much as possible. The modalities used need to be gentle, clear, long, wide and deep in order for the human organism to recognize internal self-acceptance---a self embedded in divine love.
Simultaneous touch, talk and movement offered with sincere, gentle, skilled and sensitive psycho-physical intelligence gives us a way-in. It invites us onto the pathway of trust, memory, wholeness and celebration.
Modalities which intend to break through the client's carefully established boundaries simply create more painful defenses and contractions. Boundaries need to be honored first. The practitioner needs to be able to carefully and sensitively work at the threshold of the client's ingeniously created defense mechanisms. If a safe invitation is established, then the person can feel self-empowered enough to let go of the protection that was chosen at the time, but is now no longer needed.
Eventually the body will take on a soft, wide, long, and deep shape in which the emotions experience a space of belonging and have a place to breathe. This place of emotional ownership and acknowledgement gives the person an opportunity to gain clarity of choice. A differentiation process takes place where we find out which needs and wants are to be left in the past... and which learnings are brought into the present and future. We shake off our conditioning, or even let it lovingly go... our pain-body transforms... and the over-protective ego-self is integrated in a vast whole. This leads to small and then increasingly larger openings to self-trust, and eventually to a sense of an unlimited creative love. We can perceive this love and record it in the cellular memory of muscles, bones and organs; in the brain-body and in the heart-mind.
With sensitive listening through simultaneous touch, talk and movement, the body begins to "speak" and is joined by mind and emotions. They are skillfully concertizing to create a refined individual and uniquely human symphony. Our divinity has found a home in our body, mind and emotions. And that is why we have been given a physical, mental and emotional BODY by the creative power we call God and many other names---in order to EXPERIENCE the creative SPIRIT on our beautiful planet Earth, Gaia.
Our scientific discoveries lead us down a very limited path again and again. The MRI may be able to enlighten us about brain function, or the computer might be able to train us to register specific brain responses. But it is the finely tuned human-to-human interactions, and human to the essential and divine-self interactions, that will guide us to remember our innocence and kindle a deep belief in our astonishing abilities that go far beyond acquired knowledge and habitual ways of seeing and experiencing.
UNERGI---unity and energy---intends to unravel our belief in the "me-body" identification until we learn to accept a SPACIOUS self that is expressed in and through our whole body, whole heart, and whole nature.
